We would like to start our interview with some introductions. Maya, could you please tell us a little about yourself for the readers of our blog?
Hi everyone! I'm Maya Hansen, a Spanish fashion designer based in Madrid. I've been passionate about fashion since I was a young girl, and I've always been drawn to the beauty and complexity of clothing. I'm known for my innovative designs, particularly my signature corset pieces. My goal is to create garments that empower women and make them feel confident and beautiful. The corset is a fundamental piece in my work, as it allows me to explore the female form, play with volumes, and create unique silhouettes. Through it, I seek to redefine femininity and celebrate the diversity of bodies.
You are known for your vibrant collaborations and work with popular celebrities such as Lady Gaga, Kylie Jenner, and others. What do you believe is the secret and energy behind your designs that attract the interest of such bright and well-known personalities? Was it difficult to establish a close connection and relationship in order to highlight their individuality through your style?
The energy behind my designs, I believe, stems from a desire to empower women and celebrate individuality. Collaborating with bold and iconic personalities like Lady Gaga and Kylie Jenner has been instrumental in elevating my brand and reaching a global audience. These partnerships have allowed me to showcase my ability to create pieces that are both fashion-forward and meaningful, resonating with a diverse range of people.
In your designs, there is a sense of dynamics and smoothness, while at the same time there seems to be a drive towards simplicity and a “geometric” quality in your collections. How was the DNA of your brand created? How would you articulate the essence of the message conveyed by your creations for the fans of your collections?
I believe the dynamic and smooth aesthetic of my designs stems from a harmonious blend of classic and contemporary elements. I'm drawn to the beauty of the human form, and I strive to create pieces that both celebrate and enhance it. The geometric quality you mention comes from my love of structure and precision. I find that clean lines and bold shapes can be incredibly powerful and expressive.
The essence of my designs is to empower women. I want my pieces to make women feel confident, beautiful, and strong. By combining classic techniques with modern sensibilities, I aim to create timeless garments that transcend trends. My goal is to evoke a sense of elegance, sophistication, and a touch of rebellion. Each collection tells a story, whether it's a nod to history or a vision of the future. I hope that my designs inspire and empower those who wear them.

I would like to refer to your advice for aspiring fashion designers given during an interview for ELLE Education, where you especially emphasize perseverance and hard work. A part of a very famous song comes to mind: “Birds don’t just fly, they fall down and get up.” It’s remarkable that you highlight perseverance over talent. Is there an interesting sequence of events that led you to understand that what matters most to you is the continuous process of improving your skills and talent? Can you tell us about it?
Absolutely. I believe that while talent is certainly a gift, it's perseverance and hard work that truly of creating something beautiful. So, my advice to aspiring designers is to stay passionate, work hard, and never stop learning.
We understand that you are not only a practicing fashion designer but also teach corsetry in Spain. Why do you think corsets are making a comeback? Is there indeed a growing demand for corsets?
The resurgence of the corset is a fascinating phenomenon. It's a testament to the cyclical nature of fashion and the enduring appeal of classic silhouettes. There are a few reasons why I believe corsets are making a comeback:
1) Body Positivity and Empowerment: Corsets are no longer solely associated with restrictive beauty standards. Today, they are embraced as a tool for body positivity and self-expression. They can enhance one's figure, boost confidence, and celebrate individuality.
2) Nostalgia and Vintage Aesthetics: Vintage fashion and retro styles are experiencing a revival, and the corset is a quintessential element of these aesthetics. People are drawn to the romantic and nostalgic appeal of historical fashion.
3) Versatility and Modern Design: Contemporary designers are reinterpreting the corset, transforming it into a versatile garment that can be worn with various outfits. From casual to formal, the corset can add a touch of drama and sophistication.
Teaching corsetry has been a rewarding experience. I believe that by understanding the history, construction, and potential of the corset, designers can create innovative and empowering garments. It's exciting to see how this timeless piece continues to evolve and inspire.
There are many types of corsets, ranging from simple ones that are accessible to almost anyone just starting to learn sewing and pattern-making; yet, in essence, they are some of the most complex garments. How accessible are your teaching approaches for someone who is still not very familiar with pattern making?
My teaching approach focuses on breaking down complex techniques into simpler steps, making the process of corset-making accessible to a wide range of learners. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced seamstress, I strive to provide clear instructions and helpful tips.
I start with basic pattern-making techniques and gradually introduce more advanced concepts as students gain confidence. By focusing on understanding the underlying principles of construction, students can adapt the techniques to create their own unique designs.
While corsets can be intricate, with practice and patience, anyone can master the art of corsetry. It's about taking it one step at a time and celebrating each small victory.
